Mathematics

The four year BEd Primary and Secondary programmes in mathematics offer students the opportunity to develop their knowledge of aspects of academic mathematics, whilst preparing them for a teaching career in the primary or post-primary school. There are currently three tutors contributing to the programme, which includes a substantial element of mathematics education in each year alongside more academic aspects of mathematics. The facilities available are excellent and include a state-of-the-art mathematics laboratory in which each computer has the computer algebra system “Mathematica”, as well as the program Cabri Geometry, installed. This facility is used throughout the four years for teaching and learning.

Mathematics students from all four years of the BEd get a chance to meet each other and socialise with the tutors at the traditional Christmas dinner. There is also the Mathematical Society which organises trips to places of mathematically historical significance.
