Initial Teacher Education in Northern Ireland

Recognition as a teacher in Northern Ireland can be achieved through two different qualifications:

• Bachelor of Education degree course (BEd)
• Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

In Northern Ireland courses of Initial Teacher Education are provided by:

• St Mary’s University College
• Stranmillis University College
• The Graduate School of Education at Queen’s University (PGCE only)
• University of Ulster (PGCE only)

Initial Teacher Education courses offered at St Mary’s are:

• BEd (Hons) Primary
• BEd (Hons) Post-Primary
• PGCE (Irish Medium Education) Primary
