On Thursday, 17 February 2011, a group of two staff and seven students from the Doane Stuart School, Albany, New York, visited St Mary’s. The group had a tour of the College and lunch in the Old Library before embarking on the political walking tour of the Falls and Shankill Roads organised by Coiste.
Doane Stuart is an amalgamation of two schools: one Catholic; and one Episcopalian. In this sense, it is unique in the American school context. It caters for pupils at both the primary and post primary level.
For the past two years, St Mary’s and Stranmillis University College have been invited to send one student each to work in Doane Stuart and live with a host family in Albany for three weeks. This year, the lucky participants are Gerard Fee from St Mary’s and Tracy Redmond from Stranmillis. Both are third year BEd students studying Primary Music and Post Primary Business Studies and Economics respectively.
