Summer School in West Belfast

11 August 2015

The West Belfast Partnership Board (WBPB), supported by the Department of Education and St Mary’s University College, has organized its third summer school in the West Belfast constituency area. The summer school is for pupils transferring from primary to post-primary school this September and focuses on literacy, numeracy, and developing the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects. The summer school has been designed to smooth the transition from primary to post-primary school and will encourage learning by making it a fun experience, with activities and trips included.

The 2015 Summer School will take place in St Mary’s University College, 191 Falls Road, from Monday, 17 August, to Friday, 21 August, 10:00 am—3:00 pm. The Summer School programme will be delivered by fully qualified local teachers, along with support staff and students from St Mary’s University College, and taught in both Irish and English.

The school is open to all children from the West Belfast constituency areas who are starting first year in post-primary education.

The school is completely free of charge, and lunch is provided.

The West Belfast Partnership Board is very excited by the third year of this initiative and is committed to raising educational attainment in all sectors of education in the local area.

The West Belfast Partnership Board has been delivering Easter Schools for fourteen years, focusing on maths GCSE support. Building on this success, the WBPB is confident that the Summer School will also become an annual event. We will be working closely with the Department of Education to evaluate and develop the Summer School for future years.

The West Belfast Partnership Board would like to thank the Department of Education for funding this programme.
