Ladies Footballers Clinch All-Ireland League Title

On a cold night in the Dublin City University (DCU) GAA grounds in Glasnevin, our ladies’ footballers clinched a historic win for the College with a 1-11 to 1-08 victory over the Garda ladies.

Managed by two of our students, Patrick McBride and Patrick McAleer, the women have made a serious improvement this year and advanced through the group stages to win their quarter-final against the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), 3-13 to 1-3. They then faced a tough test against Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT), to whom they narrowly lost in the group stages by two points, but came out victors winning by 4-18 to 3-9.

This set up a final against the Garda, who proved tough competitors on the night. Performances by Niamh McGirr, Niamh Henderson and Maggie Hagan helped the women seal their win.

The women, captained by Hannah Magorrian, went into this campaign “under the radar”, and this displays the magnitude of their win and the quality of the team and their management.

Patrick McBride, St Mary’s student and Antrim footballer, commented:

“I am very proud of the women. Their commitment all year has been fantastic, and I am so glad that they got what they deserved in winning tonight.”
