Update on St Mary's Sports Teams – November 2016
Men’s Senior Gaelic Football: After a shaky start against Queen’s the men regained form, and had formidable victories over Ulster University Jordanstown (UUJ) and Trinity College Dublin. They progressed to the quarter final of the Ryan Cup where they were defeated by a strong Dublin City University (DCU) side in Dublin.
Intermediate Footballers: The 2nd team sailed through the league with a 100% record. No team came within five points and they also progressed to the quarter finals. Like the senior team, they bowed out of the competition at the hands of DCU.
Ladies Footballers: The ladies, under new management, have had a mixed start to their league campaign. They travelled to Donegal and were narrowly defeated by Letterkenny Institute of Technology. They rectified that performance with an inspiring win over Queen’s 2nds. However, due to results elsewhere, they could not progress. They now await the draw for the championship fixtures.
Freshers Footballers: This group has really bonded over the last number of weeks. The team is being led by a mixture of current and ex-St Mary’s students. Former “Ranchers” Kevin Niblock, Justin McMahon and Marty Murray are being assisted by current students Patrick Sweeney, Brendan McKernan and Ruairí Wilson. They brushed away the challenge of Queen’s and DCU St Patrick’s, and went on to meet UUJ. They trailed by seven points at the break only to turn the game around to win by one point. In the quarter final, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology awaited the Freshers. After a more than impressive first-half performance, they disposed of their opponents on a score line of 5-15 to 1-12. They travel to County Kildare this Wednesday to face University College Cork in the semi-final and we wish them the best of luck.
Soccer 1sts: The men’s soccer season began with a 1-0 defeat to Stranmillis University College. They then went on to beat our 2nd team and Queen’s 2nds on score lines of 9-0 and 7-0. On Wednesday, 24 November the team achieved a great 2-1 win over Queen's meaning they have now progressed to the league final. The team is managed this year by BEd 4 student Lee Ruddy.
Soccer 2nds: This is the first year St Mary’s has had two soccer teams. The 2nds began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Queen’s 2nds. They were then defeated 9-0 by St Mary’s 1sts and 6-0 by Queen’s 1sts. Their final league fixture will be against UUJ. BEd2 student Michael Rice is in charge of the team.
Camogie: The team is managed by BEd4 student Ruairí Devlin. The girls travelled to face Trinity College Dublin and were defeated by a margin of five points, and faced another defeat in Dublin by Marino College. They now await the draw for the championship fixtures.
Hurling: Also managed by Ruairí Devlin, the hurlers had a historic win over Queen’s on Tuesday night. Like the camogs, they were also defeated by Marino, and now await the draw for championship fixtures.
Netball: The netball team have a 100% success rate in the league this year. So far, they have disposed of Queen’s and Ulster University Coleraine on score lines of 48-27 and 28-22.
