Top Four

9 February 2017

St Mary’s senior footballers put in an exceptional performance to overcome Dublin City University (DCU) by one point after extra time in a thrilling Sigerson Cup game in the capital city.

This places St Mary’s in the top four of universities and colleges in Gaelic football for the first time in many years.

Great credit must go to coach Paddy Tally and his management team, including Ciaran Kearney, who works in the field of sports psychology. Paddy has, for many years, nurtured teams with a great work ethic, a strong sense of identity and a capacity to “never give up”. Each of these traits got his team of students over the line in Dublin.

After the game Paddy said, “There were exceptional individual performances from our players. They displayed a hunger and a drive to win. In addition, they had the footballing intelligence to solve problems on the field of play as they arose. Above all, they had a fantastic spirit, something that cannot be bought but has to be developed as a group.”
