"Across Borders"

8 May 2017

Dr Gerard McCann, Senior Lecturer in International Studies at St Mary’s University College, was invited to give the keynote address at this year’s prestigious transnational “Across Borders” conference, which took place on 29-30 April 2017 in the Russian-Estonian border city of Tartu.

The theme of Dr McCann’s lecture was “Post-Truth Society and the Case for Europe”, which surveyed changing attitudes to European integration and reflected on the aspirations of those who articulated the ideal for a new Europe in the post-war period. Twenty different countries were represented at the conference with dozens of universities sending academics to participate in the three-day series of talks and seminars. Tartu was chosen for the venue given the heightening of political and military tensions between Russia and the Baltic States.

Dr McCann’s keynote speech will be published in a collection by Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa w Krośnie later this year.

Dr McCann is pictured on a visit to the Estonian Parliament with Prof. Ewa Bndura, Prof. Katarzyna Dziemian, Prof. Wladyslaw Chlopicki (Jagiellonian University, Kraków), Prof. Renata Kamenická (Masaryk University, Czechia) and Dr Liisi Laineste, Eesti Kirjandusmuuseum (EKM).
