On Monday, 22nd October, St Mary’s was delighted to play host to fifteen young people from various parts of Liverpool as well as staff from Hugh Baird College. This visit was part of a joint project between Queen’s University and Hugh Baird to promote an aspiration to higher education among care experienced secondary school pupils. The visitors (and their mascot, a bear called “Honey Rose”), were met by the St Mary’s Students’ Union President, Bronagh McCaughan, and Vice President, Damien Ball, and welcomed to the College by the widening access officer, Susan Morgan. After receiving their welcome packs, the visitors were treated to a short presentation about the College and the degree courses St Mary’s offers. They heard testimony from four St Mary's students — Bronagh, Damien, Jason and Eva — who described their experience of student life here and the kind of help and support that is available from staff, student support services and the students’ union. After a short question-and-answer session and the sharing of some Liverpudlian catchphrases in exchange for a few Irish words, the visitors embarked on a tour of the campus facilities before heading off to their next appointment. St Mary’s wishes the young pupils and all the staff of Hugh Baird College a great few days in Northern Ireland and a safe trip back to Liverpool. |
