Shakespeare for Everyone

5 December 2012

Shakespeare

Dr Matthew Martin, Senior Lecturer in English at St Mary's, has recently returned from delivering a series of talks and workshops in Italy on teaching Shakespeare to children in schools.

Entitled, Shakespeare for Everyone, the sessions were directed at school teachers from across the German and Italian-speaking regions of Northern Italy who were attending a conference organised by the Pädagogisches Institut, Südtirol.

His talks addressed issues such as Studying Shakespearean English – for Speakers of Other Languages, Genre and Context in the Classroom and Text and Performance for Children.

One teacher who attended the sessions commented,

"I came to these talks thinking, who's afraid of William Shakespeare? I am! But I left them feeling that now I am a huge fan and can't wait to tackle one of the bard's plays with my students."
