Short Description

Orla Nugent is Course Team Leader for Music, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an External Examiner for a PGCE programme in Music with Plymouth University. She taught for ten years in post-primary education, eight of those as Head of Department for Music before joining the staff of St Mary’s University College. She is responsible for the BEd programme with Music in addition to leading the college choir every year for the annual Carol Service and other liturgical services.

Current Research

She is passionate about singing and the benefits that choral singing in particular can have on individuals and groups. She conducts clinical practice every year in two primary schools to enhance collaboration between the HE and primary sectors and one of these placements focuses on the development of good singing techniques endorsed by the work of Jenevora Williams. She has presented at TEAN Birmingham regarding student teachers’ perceptions about the value of pre-placement exposure in a new key stage and continues to research in the area of situated learning. She highly values the work of music therapists in mainstream education and invites a guest speaker every year to provide exposure about their work in a primary school setting.
